Mini Maestro Review/Giveaway

As promised I am reviewing the absorbency of Mini Maestros new insert. With the review I am giving you all a chance to win your own Mini Maestro.

This is exciting to me  because Mini Maestro sits at the top of my stash and the diaper my husband and mother request if they are left home with my son. My experience with the has been amazing. The feel, the fit and the usability is fabulous. This hook loop is not positioned to rub up against your babies delicate skin as many hook loop tend to do if your baby isn't just the right size. They have a trim fit for your older baby in their jeans. Having boys this is a huge factor for us. The elastic is inside the fleece around babies legs. No imprints left on chunky thighs. I loved my old insert. I can't wait to show you all the improvements.

Just some basic info about Mini Maestro is a sized diaper. You can get Small, Medium, Medium Slim or Large. Your not going to find a One Sized diaper here. They make diapers to fit. This is preferable since all babies are different and One size as adjustable as they might be are not always the best choice for your baby. They have not been for mine. I prefer a sized diaper.

Large22-35+10-1612-22

Mini Maestros NEW! insert is 5 layers (bamboo / flannel / zorb / flannel / bamboo) 2 ounces dry comparing them to their older insert that is 3 layers (bamboo / zorb / bamboo) 2.05 ounces dry.
#1 Older Insert
#2 New Insert

Our first test will be slightly modified from our original science projects tests. Instead of dumping 4 ounces of water inside the cover with the insert stuffed we are going to test the inserts alone. Using a PlanetWise Sandwich size food storage bag and allowing no time for the water to absorb. Calling the older insert #1 and the newer insert #2.

#1 Insert  left 5ml of water
#2 Insert  left 3ml of water

Our second test is measuring how much water the insert holds after the wash.

Original weight vs. right out of the washing machine

#1 insert was 2.05 oz. dry. With wash it became 3.95 oz. That's is almost twice the weight of a dry insert.

#2 insert was 2 oz. dry. With the wash it became 3.50 oz. That's an entire 1.5 oz. gained.

Our next test is submerging the insert into 8 oz of water and measuring what is left after 5 minutes. We have to wait on the dryer now. ****
I had to do 12 oz. of water on each. The old #1 insert held all but 15 ml. The new #2 insert was all but 50ml. I can't wait to see after it's been washed another month or so since bamboo is more absorbant over time. Thanks you for this opportunity.

Alana Smith is our MiniMaestro Winner! I notified you via email. Please respond with your color and size. Congratulations!

****Due to the fact we have multiple tests we will keep updating this blog post after each wash/dry and test.

Science Experiment Results

This is our final results for: What cloth diaper is the most absorbent?

Our three finalists are Thirsties Duo, Hiney Lineys Versa System and Happy Heinys with a Hemp/Cotton Fleece Prefold.

This test was 8 ounces of water in a gallon size Planet Wise Food storage bag. We turned the diapers inside out submerging the inside into the water. We timed the soak for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes we pulled the diaper out slowly letting what ever poured of dripped off the diaper collect in the bag. Then we measured the liquid left.

  1. Thristies Duo - Left 50 ml of water and the cover was damp around the legs.
  2. Hiney Lineys Versa system = left 50 ml of water and the cover was dry.
  3. Happy Heinys/Geffen Baby combo- left 5ml of water with a damp cover only near the seams of the cover.
With that we have determined Happy Heinys and Geffen Baby Organic Cotton/Hemp Fleece prefold to be the most absorbent by 45ml of water.

As promised we choose a winner for a $25 Gift Card. Please contact us as soon as you can to redeem your Gift Certificate. Thank you all so very much for helping out a Kid and his Mom collect valuable dada for a School Science project.

For those of you waiting to see the new insert MiniMaestro has sent me. I have it prepping now. I will do all the same tests and post them on a separate post. My gut feeling is they are going to Great! Bamboo and Zorb are super absorbent materials and they have combined them in to 1 product and added flannel. I hope you all take the time to check this one out as well. MiniMaestro is a staple diaper in our home on Baby sitting , Daddy and Grandma days!

Day 5 of our Science experiment

Here's our final test. We have narrowed down our results to Hiney Liney Versa system, Thirsties Duos, and Happy Heinys with a Geffen Baby organic hemp/cotton fleece prefold size small.

Our final experiment is adding 8 ounces of water into our gallon size Plane Wise food storage bag. The diaper is submerged inside out for 5 minutes and what is left in the bag is measured.

Here's your last chance to guess what cloth diaper can hold the most liquid. Our results will be published Wednesday along with a Gift card winner randomly selected from Experiment days 2 through 5. We have also decided to increase the prize from $10 to $20. We're trying to get a better graph for the project we are turning in to the school. Please add your vote and ask a friend to vote. Thank you so much!

Experiment Day 4

First Test dumping 4 ounces of water showed Hiney Liney and Thirsties Duo to be most absorbent and the outside of the cover stayed dry.
Second test showed Geffen Baby, bumGenius, Incredibum, and Thirsties Duo holding more than half of their weight dry in liquid right out of the top loader washing machine.

Test 3-
This test is timed. We assemble all the diapers on the largest setting. We poured 4 ounces of water in a one gallon Planet Wise food storage bag. Turning the diaper inside out and dipping the diaper in the liquid for 5 minutes here are the results we got.

  • GroVia Shell and Hemp Cotton blend soaker - left 50ml in the bag, the cover was dry.
  • Incredibum -absorbed all 4 ounces cover around the legs are wet.
  • Babykicks 3G - absorbed all 4 ounces, cover wet around legs.
  • Hiney Lineys Versa - absorbed all 4 ounces and the cover is dry.
  • bum Genius 4.0 - left less than 2.5 ml in the bag, around the leg was wet.
  • Thirsties Duo -absorbent all 4 ounces with a dry cover
  • Happy Heinys OS w/ Geffen Baby hemp/cotton fleece prefold - absorbed all 4 ounces and cover was dry.
We decided at the end of this test for the diapers where all the liquid was absorbed to add an additional 4 ounces to the bag. Leaving the diaper inside out to measure the run off after 5 minutes. We will repeat this test starting with 8 ounces of water to verify the results were accurate after rewashing and drying the diapers.

  • Happy Heiny w/Geffen Baby prefold -absorbed all of the additional 4 ounces. The cover was wet.
  • Hiney Liney - absorbed all of the additional 4 ounces. The cover remained dry.
  • Thirsties Duo - absorbed all of the additional 4 ounces. The cover was completely soaked through.

Experiment Day 3

As it stands currently Hiney Lineys and Thirsties Duo are the most absorbent holding 4 ounces in our first test with a dry cover. I found out that Mini Maestro has a new insert 5 layers (bamboo / flannel / zorb / flannel / bamboo) I should be testing. They are gracious enough to being shipping me one to try. Once recieved I will be updating older post  and this with the results in Red.  I can't wait to see how they rank knowing and seeing how thirsty both bamboo and zorb both are.

This is a list of weight changes between being Dry and Right out of the washing machine. Inserts  absorbency listed only. All diaper were washed in the wash of a top loader with 2 cold water rinses.

Wet/Dry/Difference (absorbed weight)

  • Geffen Baby Fleece Prefold -                               8.35 oz 4.00 oz 4.35 oz
  • Babykicks One size Joey -                                    4.25 oz 2.35 oz  1.9oz

    Science Experiment Day 2

We decided that an average 2 year old holds about 4 ounces in their bladder. Since most 2 year old babies are still in diapers we would use a 4 ounce bladder as the base for what each diaper should hold.

For this test we placed the diaper set up on it's largest setting into a gallon size Planet Wise Food storage bag. We poured exactly 4 ounces of water into the diaper. The water that spilt over the sides of the diaper was poured in to s dry glass measuring cup and recorded. We do not feel this was the most accurate test.  Our reason is some of the covers looked wet on the outside after this test.

    Our results:
    • Incredibum Yes, can hold 4 ounces of liquid. The cover looked wet.
    • Babykicks 3G Yes, can hold 4 ounces of liquid. The cover looked wet.
    • Gro-Via No, it held 2 ounces of water. The cover looked wet.
    • Mini Maestro No, it held 2.3 ounces. The cover looked wet
    • bumGenuis 4.0  Yes, it can hold 4 ounces of liquid. The cover looked wet.
    • Thirsties Duo  Yes, it can hold 4 ounces of liquid. The cover did not look wet.
    • Hiney Liney  Yes, it can hold 4 ounces of liquid. The cover did not look wet.
    • Happy Heinys + Geffen Baby prefold No, it can hold 3.6 ounces. The cover looked wet.

Our next test we are going to pour 4 ounces of water in the bag and turn the diaper inside out an submerge in the liquid for 5 minutes to see how much is collected.  Take a guess what you think will absorb the most. A random winner will be selected for a $10 gift certificate. You don't need a correct answer to win.

      Science Experiment Day 1

      Just the facts.

      • It is impossible to tell you exactly how much urine your baby will produce.
      • Each once of these diaper systems are different in material, weight  and how they fit a baby.

Given that. These tests are intended to see how much liquid each diaper can hold and should not be the only reason to choose one diaper over another. Some factors not considered in these tests are weight or shape of a baby, liveliness of the baby's movement, any period of time the baby may be in a diaper.

Here' is what we found out about the child's bladder.

The amount of urine a child's bladder should hold can be calculated by the following equation:
AGE + 2 = BLADDER CAPACITY (in ounces)
      or
      (AGE + 2)30 = BLADDER CAPACITY (in milliliters/cubic centimeters)
For example, a 5-year-old child's bladder should hold:
      5 + 2 = 7 ounces
      or
      (5+2) 30 = 210 ml or cc's

Objective: To find out what cloth diaper holds the most liquid.

How: Each diaper will be weighed clean and dry. Each diaper will be placed into a clean Ziploc bag while water is added to collect any spilled water. Water being added to the diaper will be measured as well as the water spilt for the diaper.

      Weight of each diaper
      • Incredibum 4.60 Ounces We are only using 1 snap in insert
      • Babykicks 3G 5.00 ounces
      • Gro-Via 5.40 ounces
      • Mini Maestro 4.30 ounces
      • bumGenuis 4.0 4.60 ounces
      • Thirsties Duo 5.35 ounces
      • Hiney Liney 5.45 ounces
      • Happy Heinys + Geffen Baby prefold 6.50 ounces
Now we make a guess what diaper will hold the most liquid. (Not part of the experiment but to hopefully get a good graph of guesses I would like to offer a $15 Gift Certificate drawn randomly from people who post their guess. Please only post 1 once. Your answer does not have to be correct to win.)
